Grip fighting is one of the most important aspects of Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. When we talk about grip fighting, we're not just referring to preventing our opponent from grabbing our gi. That's only a small part of it. Grip fighting is about controlling where our opponent can grip us, and more importantly, controlling where WE can grip them. In this blog post, we'll discuss why grip fighting is so important and how you can start incorporating it into your game!
I'm not sure how I first got interested in grip fighting. Maybe it was because I was a big fan of judo as a kid, or maybe it was because I just liked the idea of using my hands to control and dominate my opponents. Either way, grip fighting has always been a passion of mine.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to train with some of the best grip fighters in the world. I've also consulted and taught some of the best coaches and competitors in the world when it comes to grip fighting. And through all of this, I've learned some valuable lessons about this important aspect of judo.

One of the most important areas of competitive judo is that of grip fighting. Grip fighting is also known as kumikata. However, kumikata is the are gripping. The science and understanding of where to put your hands, how to orientate your hands and the order in which you need to put your hands is what we call the art and science of grip fighting.

In this Fly On The Wall Episode, Dr. Rhadi Ferguson illustrates his teaching style and the flavor of Tampa Florida Judo as he covers Grip Fighting in the advanced class with his son Rufus and goes over some of the throwing techniques in the fundamentals class.
This Fly On The Wall video is pretty entertaining because there's also some randori in here also. You can also see why the football players love doing Judo. Rufus (Sickles High School), AJ Henderson (Sickles High School) and Andrew Hess (East Lake High School) are all football players. Judo is an awesome sport for football. Dr. Rhadi Ferguson was also a Divison 1 Football scholarship athlete at Howard University.

Everybody knows that drilling is an important part of the skills acquisition puzzle.
if you want to be good, you have to drill and you have to practice. There's no way around that. In this video we cover some of the basic guard passing drills that we used to develop the guard passing skills of the judo and jiujitsu players in the dojo. Passing the guard is an important part of the newaza developmental process and understanding how to do this in gi and no gi situaitons is important.
So enjoy the video and note how we also add a warmup and cardiovascular conditioning component to the drills as well.
